Conquer The Climbs
From the gentle, rolling lanes of the Golden Valley to some of the most legendary and punishing inclines in the UK, The Hayloft is the ultimate base camp for cyclists. Whether you are looking for a leisurely ride or a grueling ascent, the routes straight from our door are spectacular.
A bucket-list climb for any serious road cyclist. Starting near Hay-on-Wye, this iconic route takes you up through the Black Mountains, peaking at 549 metres. The ascent is tough, but the reward is a breathtaking, sweeping descent into the Llanthony Valley.
The single-track road winds its way up past wild ponies and dramatic moorland, offering some of the most remote and stunning scenery you can experience on two wheels.
For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, the Golden Valley offers miles of quiet, meandering country lanes. Sheltered by the Black Mountains to the west, this route takes you through picturesque villages like Peterchurch and Abbey Dore.
Expect rolling hills, ancient hedgerows, and plenty of opportunities to stop at a traditional country pub or a farm shop for a well-earned slice of cake.
If you're willing to venture slightly further afield, the legendary 'Tumble' (Keeper's Pond) near Abergavenny offers a famous 6km climb with an average gradient of 8%, regularly featured in the Tour of Britain.
Alternatively, tackle the steep, punchy inclines around Craswell and Black Hill right on our doorstep. The terrain here is unforgiving but incredibly rewarding for those who love to climb.
Don't have your own bike? No problem. The Wye Valley is well-served by excellent local bike hire shops that offer everything from high-end road bikes to comfortable e-bikes, with delivery options available.
